MENTAL HEALTH WEEK 2024 RECAP
The 73rd annual CMHA Mental Health Week served up a double-double of kindness and compassion that spread throughout the community all week. Each year at the beginning of May, CMHA Mental Health Week celebrates and raises awareness about the importance of mental health. The theme this year was simple but mighty: Be Kind.
Activities that took place were created to raise awareness about mental health and provide the community with opportunities to give, receive and observe acts of kindness during a time when many people report feeling overwhelmed. Research shows that compassion can:
- Increase feelings of happiness
- Be soothing and calming
- Increase trust and connection
- Improve emotional resilience
- Ease depression
The week also marked the launch of an exciting new annual community campaign, also led by CMHA North Bay and District, called: The Kindness Project
MONDAY kicked off the week at City Hall with a flag-raising, light-up ceremony and cupcake blitz. TUESDAY focused on being kind to us with an outdoor Zumba session hosted by Zumba with Rox and a popcorn party at City Hall hosted by DNSSAB. The North Bay Regional Health Centre showed kindness to those who work in the health and human services fields by hosting an education day and Kindness Zone on WEDNESDAY and sponsored a food truck pop-up with free ice cream throughout the week. Our furry friend, Chewie, and Gillian from VCARS pet therapy program, helped us on THURSDAY to spread the message on ways to be kind to animals. FRIDAY wrapped up an amazing week with a great turnout for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Peer Connections location followed by an open house and community BBQ.
