At CMHA NBD, we understand that the violence faced by 2 Spirit, trans, and non binary individuals is not a historical issue. It’s happening now. This community is still experiencing alarming rates of violence, discrimination, and systemic marginalization.
We cannot treat this as something that happened "in the past"—it’s an ongoing crisis that demands our immediate attention and action.
On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we not only mourn those we’ve lost but acknowledge the urgent need to address the violence that continues to affect these communities today. From transphobic hate crimes to barriers in healthcare, the struggle for rights is far from over. This is a day for deep reflection and for action. It’s time to recognize that transphobia isn’t just a relic of history. It’s a present-day issue that we all must confront.
2 Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse people experience unique mental health challenges, often shaped by feelings of exclusion and discrimination. These communities report higher rates of mental health struggles and unmet needs, highlighting the profound impact of stigma and a lack of culturally safe, affirming spaces.
Yet, resilience is a core trait of the community. Despite facing these barriers, they continue to push forward, fight for their rights, and demand safety and equality. Let’s educate ourselves, amplify 2 Spirit, trans, and non-binary voices, and work together to build a world where all people—especially trans and gender-diverse individuals can live free from fear and violence.
